How Do You Handle Curveballs?

In fiction writing, an author first visualizes and creates characters in their head before bringing them to life within the confines of a story. However, as the characters grow and interact with other characters or elements of the plot, the author will undoubtedly encounter curveballs. Maybe a character or story arc needs refining or significant altering to make the story better, clearer, and more salable.

Changes, big or small, are unavoidable. And when all the adjustments have been made, the author will come to see that the final product differs, sometimes vastly, from the original moment of conceptualization. And, of course, authors are guilty of throwing curveballs at their readers to keep them invested in the book.

Similarly, life is about how we manage the curveballs tossed our way, day in and day out. Fairly or unjustly, timely or surprising, mild or devastating, they all require our attention. Even the road to the city of Oz was fraught with darkness, fear, and looming destruction. Oh, poor Dorothy and her crew!

Therefore, don’t step back and out of the batter’s box when a curveball is blazing toward you. Dig in your cleats (courage), grit your teeth (boldness), keep your eye on the ball (confidence), and swing your bat with conviction (victory!). You WILL get to first base safely, and maybe beyond. Success is never guaranteed, but failure is—if you don’t take your turn at bat. Go now and swing away!

“The Lord guides us in the way we should go
and protects those who please him.
If they fall, they will not stay down,
because the Lord will help them up.” (Psalm 37:23-24 GNT)
