Have You Never Experienced True Love?

Is it possible for someone to live their entire life and believe they never had a true love, a forever person, and that they’d always married or dated wrong? That question came up in a writing critique group when someone asked about one of my characters, “How can that be possible?”

Well, since I believe plenty of people go through life never finding true love, I bring that disheartening failure up in every book in my romance fiction series, The Golden Slide. I will always have at least one major character who questions whether they’ve ever fallen into true love, since all they’ve experienced is divorce(s) or busted relationships. They now languish in states of perpetual forlornness.

Their relationships may have felt like they were falling in love, but when the newness passed, they realized something wasn’t working. Whatever the cause, they couldn’t sustain their love for that person. And whether that happened quickly or over time, they knew it hadn’t been true love from the start. It must have been something else.

Some people even fall out of love with the idea of forever love.

However, since I believe in second chances and happy endings, my loveless characters will develop a growing hunger and hope for an encounter with their forever person, not wanting to die without one last shot at nailing down true love!
