Just as in writing a novel, so it is in life. An author must identify their target audience, and so should each of us understand that the people we allow into our inner circle must love and sacrifice as we do, share similar goals and purposes, and hold common beliefs and interests. Otherwise, we set ourselves up for tension, heartache, and a cynical mindset.
My novel is primarily geared toward female romantics—Boomers, Gen X, and, maybe, very early Millennials. Therefore, I will not conduct intensive outreach to younger generations, as they won’t respond to references from the 1960s to the mid-1980s. Also, the characters will mostly be in their sixties. I mean no insult, but they won’t get what I’ll be putting across. We simply are not on the same page in life. And that’s okay. It really is!
The same thing is true in our private lives, isn’t it? We all have our differences, which can be quite significant. We live in a world where far too many people refuse to agree to disagree. It’s their way or the highway. That’s not the kind of audience you want to play to, so release them without feeling guilty. Life is too short to force square pegs into round holes.
I begin each morning searching for peace and tranquility, mutual affection and admiration, and sincerity and trustworthiness. I can do without the noise of this broken world!
“Do not make friends with a hot-tempered person,
do not associate with one easily angered,
or you may learn their ways
and get yourself ensnared.” (Proverb 22:24-25 NIV)
May all that you do bring God the glory and honor!
